In June of 2018 the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturned the Quill Commerce Law in a 5-4 decision, the South Dakota VS Wayfair case. SCOTUS decided that the previous ruling under Quill created an "uneven tax system". (Supreme Court, South Dakota vs Wayfair, Inc, June 21, 2018, currently 45 states have their own "nexus" or "use" laws to govern taxation of online business. While Amazon now collects sales tax in most states it still manages to evade sales tax due to additional loopholes in paying taxes.
