1: Create Your Online Profile

Use LinkedIn to create your own online profile using the Basics: Creating Your Profile (PDF) as a guide. Your online networking profile is your online resume. You should include industry-specific key words and highlight your relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities.

If you want to make your profile semiprivate, you can do so by reviewing this area.

Step 2: Explore LinkedIn

  • Search for groups
    • Search for groups that are related to your professional network, such as the Colorado Technical University Student, Alumni, and Faculty group.
    • Search for groups that are relevant to your career field, such as business owners, health care, accounting, human services, law enforcement, and so forth.
    • Search for groups that are related to your skills or interests, such as leadership, communication, networking, writing, professional women, and so on.
  • Explore jobs and potential connections
    • Identify potential positions or organizations that match your career goals.
    • Consider following organizations or individuals that are related to your career interests.
    • Search "People" for potential connections.

Step 3: Write and Upload Your Summary

On the Discussion Board, write at least a 3 paragraph summary of your experience with creating your online profile and exploring LinkedIn. Address the following topics in your summary:

  • Discuss your experience with creating or updating your online profile. What areas of your profile will you continue to develop?
  • Discuss how you can use LinkedIn to network.
  • Discuss how LinkedIn can be used to stay on top of industry trends and information about your career field by accomplishing the following:
    • Identify 1 group with which you may connect.
    • Discuss how that group could be beneficial for your career.

Step 4: Respond to Other Students

Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with at least a 100-word reply addressing the following items:

  • What suggestions do you have for the areas of the profile that your classmate plans to develop further?
  • What are the strengths of how your classmate will use LinkedIn to network, and do you have further suggestions?
  • What additional groups might your classmate consider searching for or joining?
