Question

One of the foremost issues is the ongoing issue surrounding scope of practice regulations. Although CRNAs are highly trained professionals capable of providing anesthesia care independently, legislative constraints often limit their autonomy. As of January 22, 2020, it was established under Illinois legislation that CRNAS were not recognized as a "licensed practitioner" (Rodrick, 2024). Due to the lack of professional recognition, this caused CRNAs within Illinois to be able to perform specific procedures such as operating a fluoroscopy (Rodrick, 2024). Another significant challenge faced by CRNAs in Illinois is the increasing demand for anesthesia services amid a shortage of anesthesiologists. According to the Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (Rodrick, 2024), CRNAs are the predominant providers of anesthesia in 82% of the counties in Illinois. As hospitals and healthcare facilities strive to meet patient needs, CRNAs are often called upon to fill gaps in service delivery. VB, is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist with a DNP degree. VB has had over twenty-seven years of CRNA experience across numerous medical settings. Prior to becoming a CRNA, she states that she was a ICU liver-transplant nurse, and later graduated with her doctorate of nursing.
