Interventions that Target College Drinking
This week's Lesson focused on two different approaches to prevent college alcohol abuse and dependence. There are also many different approaches that we did not cover (e.g., alcohol education programs, alcohol-related policies). The goal of this activity is to become familiar with other interventions that target college drinking and to compare them to the approaches that were discussed in the Lesson.
To start this assignment, locate a brief article online that describes an intervention program or policy that targets college drinking. For example, you might go to the Daily Collegian online or you might browse the website.
Once you have located an interesting article, complete the following:
Make a Discussion Post
The name of the article/intervention program and the direct link to the article that you found
A brief, one-paragraph summary of the intervention or policy. In your paragraph, please include:
the type of problem that is addressed by the intervention (e.g., binge-drinking? Underage drinking? Negative consequences of drinking?);
who is targeted by the intervention and
what this intervention entails (i.e., what are the intervention activities?).
Briefly (1 paragraph or less), compare intervention to the interventions described in this week''s lesson (BASICS., CCAA or in the NIAA Assigned Reading. You may wish to consider points such as the formats used by the programs, who is targeted by the programs, or how the programs try to reduce drinking
Briefly (1 paragraph or less), describe how you would determine whether the intervention in the article works. Explain why you would use that evaluation approach and identify at least one challenge you might encounter when using that evaluation approach. If the article you read already describes an evaluation, describe what steps could take to make the evaluation stronger.
