Question
You are a new hire at a medium-sized consulting firm. Even though you've only just started, you have been placed in a managerial position (a project leader, let's say) and have spent a few days being shown the ropes by various other managers. Today is the day you meet the team you will be leading. You call an all-hands meeting (say, eight people) in a small conference room and begin laying out your vision for the project ahead.
Immediately, one of your subordinates interrupts you and demands to know why you've been placed in charge. This person claims to have more experience than you, has been with the company longer, and thinks that it's absurd that someone new has been brought in to lead the team.
Now all eyes are on you. One of your subordinates has called you out in a meeting. How do you respond?
Describe how you would respond in the above situation. You can include anything you would say or do in response. This is a discussion, so you'll be able to see the responses of your fellow students once you post.
There is no single correct approach, and you might be able to combine aspects of different approaches to figure out how you would handle the situation.
