Disasters are the outcome of either natural or manmade event which bring immense misery, damage, loss of lives or capital. Quantification of a disastrous event will provide us description of probable impacts, valuation of the damage and approximate cost of losses. As in the last one decade human community has rapidly stirred towards urbanisation and industrial growth, in the consequences unsound development, massive environmental pollution and industrial disasters are faced and yet to be witnessed.
In the following parts of the assignment, PART 1 is compulsory to answer whereas you are required to answer any ONE out of PART 2 and PART 3. Reference section must be allocated separately for the each part.
Assignment Task 1:
A. Introduction (limited to 150 words)
Introduction to the term disaster, worldwide statistics (with a graph and summary) of major industrial accidents.
B. The incident: The Buncefield explosion, 11 December 2005 (limited to 300 words)
Brief details of the Buncefield oil storage depot and the problem statement,
sequence of events of the incident, its aftermath, root causes and lesson learnt form the incident.
C. Critical analysis of the Onsite and Offsite Emergency Plans of the Buncefield oil storage depot (limited to 500 words)
Criticise the actions taken during the incident, analyse emergency
preparedness at the time of the incident for response and recovery, and your point of view on adequacy of COMAH.
D. Conclusion (limited to 50 words)
