Question

The national safety issue I chose to focus on is falls in older adults living in assisted living communities. Falls are the leading cause of injuries in older adults (Ritchey et al, 2023). According to Escedy et al. (2021), 20% of deaths that occur in long-term are from falls. My research has led me to the Otago Exercise Program (OEP) as my evidence-based intervention for reducing falls in assisted living. OEP which is named after the University it was created in, the University of Otago. The OEP was developed in New Zealand in the 90's and through initial studies reduced falls by 30% in high-risk older adults (Shubert, 2021).
