You are the Director of HRM at Pharmaco, a multinational pharmaceutical firm with its headquarters in Sydney, Australia. Pharmaco has not been very strategic in its approach to HRM in the past. However, the Board of Pharmaco recently adopted a new business strategy - to become a leading innovator in the 'natural medicine' sector of the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaco wants to build its competitive edge in this sector through providing innovative products and services. The Board of Pharmaco has asked you, the Director of HRM, to advise on HRM strategies, policies and practices that will support this new strategic direction. The Board has also suggested specifically that you consider the introduction of annual wage bonuses both for individual workers and for work teams (e.g. up to $30,000 annual bonus for individuals). At present, Pharmaco has a traditional remuneration system: paying workers for the hours they work (with weekly wages or annual salaries).
