BIOSTATISTICS ASSIGNMENT
Question 1. Use SPSS and the file bsn81.sav to produce the requested output and answer the following questions.
(a) Obtain a histogram for CHOL and comment on the shape of the distribution.
(b) Produce an Error Bar chart that show 95% confidence intervals for mean CHOL by SMOKING groups and comment on observed differences across SMOKING groups.
(c) Obtain the one-way ANOVA and post-hoc t-tests for comparing mean CHOL across SMOKING groups. Comment on the overall and pairwise tests and make a conclusion about differences (including providing estimates).
(d) Obtain the fitted linear regression model that compares mean CHOL across SEX groups (i.e. males vs females). Quote an appropriate test result and make a conclusion. If you conclude there is a difference, write a sentence interpreting the estimate and 95% CI for the difference.
(e) Obtain the fitted linear regression model that compares mean CHOL across SEX groups after adjusting for SMOKING (as a categorical factor) and EXERCISE (as a quantitative covariate). Quote an appropriate test result and make a conclusion. If you conclude there is a difference, write a sentence interpreting the estimate and 95% CI for the (adjusted) difference.
(f) Comparing (d) and (e), has adjustment for SMOKING and EXERCISE changed your conclusion about any SEX difference? Explain your answer.
Question 2. Use SPSS and the file bsn81.sav to produce the requested output and answer the following questions.
(a) Obtain a bar chart that shows the percent with CHOL>6.5 for each SMOKING group.
(b) Use crosstabs to produce a table that shows the counts and percentage with CHOL>6.5 by SMOKING groups and comment on observed differences across SMOKING groups. Obtain the overall and pairwise p-values for the Pearson chi-square tests comparing percentage with CHOL>6.5 across SMOKING groups. Comment on the overall and pairwise tests and make a conclusion about differences (including providing estimates).
(c) Obtain the fitted logistic regression model that compares the odds of CHOL>6.5 across SEX groups. Quote an appropriate test result and make a conclusion. If you conclude there is a difference write a sentence interpreting the estimate and 95% CI for the odds ratio.
(d) Obtain the fitted logistic regression model that compares the odds of CHOL>6.5 across SEX groups after adjusting for SMOKING (as a categorical factor) and EXERCISE (as a quantitative covariate). Quote an appropriate test result and make a conclusion. If you conclude there is a difference, write a sentence interpreting the estimate and 95% CI for the (adjusted) odds ratio.
(e) Comparing (d) and (e), has adjustment for SMOKING and EXERCISE changed your conclusion about any SEX difference? Explain your answer.
Question 3. This question relates to the published article “Oral health and access to dental care among older homeless adults: results from the HOPE HOME study” in Journal of Public Health Dentistry 2019.
(a) Using only the data summarised in Table 1, calculate the odds ratio for the association between highest education completed and losing half or more of teeth. Write a sentence interpreting this odds ratio.
(b) Write a sentence interpreting the “Unadjusted OR” value of 0.53 for Methamphetamines in Table 3.
(c) Write a sentence interpreting the “Unadjusted OR” value of 1.02 for Years homeless as an adult in Table 3.
(d) Write down the algebraic representation of the model or models used to produce the “Adjusted OR” results in Table 3. Explain how the Adjusted OR value of 1.09 for Age and the Adjusted OR value of 1.68 for Highest Education were obtained from the estimated
coefficients in your model. Write a sentence interpreting the Adjusted OR value of 1.56 for Cannabis use.
