Identification of Cations in Solution: Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+

You are doing this lab so that you can observe chemical and physical properties of some metal cations.

Procedure:

To start the lab, open Beyond Labz and choose Descriptive Chemistry from the presets, then open identification of cations in solution: Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+.

1. Pick up a test tube from the box on the counter and put it in the clamp on the stand. The stock room light will come on. Select one of the three cations listed above and the text tube will fill. Move the test tube to the metal rack.

2. Repeat step one until you have three test tubes filled with that cation.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other two cations. Part A: Reaction with Ammonia (NH3)

1. Move one of the test tubes filled with Cu2+ to the clamp on the stand.

2. Double-click on the dropper bottle with NH3 on it and observe any changes to the mixture.

3. Click on the test tube and bring it to the red waste container on the right bottom of the screen.

4. Repeat this for the other two cations.

Part B: Reaction with Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3)

1. Move one of the test tubes filled with Cu2+ to the clamp on the stand.

2. Double-click on the dropper bottle with Na2CO3 on it and observe any changes to the mixture.

3. Click on the test tube and bring it to the red waste container on the right bottom of the screen.

4. Repeat this for the other two cations.

Part C: Reaction with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

1. Move one of the test tubes filled with Cu2+ to the clamp on the stand.

2. Double-click on the dropper bottle with H2O2 on it and observe any changes to the mixture.

3. Click on the test tube and bring it to the red waste container on the right bottom of the screen.

4. Repeat this for the other two cations.

Part D: Flame test

1. You will have to get three new test tubes for this part and fill each with one of three cations just like you did in the first part of the lab.

2. Move one test tube to the clamp on stand and then click on the Bunsen burner.

3. A video of the cation flame will be shown in the upper right corner.

4. You can also click on the cobalt screen, but there isn't a huge difference with these three cations.

Part E: Identification of an unknown

1. Click on the Unknowns label to reconfigure the laboratory to create a practice unknown.

2. Click on the Co2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ bottles and on the holographic display on the left make the minimum = 0 and maximum = 3.

3. Click on the "Create Unknown" button. An unknown test tube labeled Practice will be placed in the blue unknown rack on the stockroom counter. Drag the practice unknown from the blue rack to the blue test tube rack on the lab bench.

4. Move the test tube to the clamp on the stand and click on the "Divide" test tube to the left of the hot plate three times. That will give you four samples of exactly the same unknown mixture.

5. Perform the three chemical reaction tests and the flame test on the mixture.

6. To check your results, click on the Lab Book and on the left page, click the Report button, select the ions you think are present in the unknown, click Submit. If the ion button is green, you correctly determined whether the ion was present or not. If the ion button is red you did not make the correct analysis.

7. Return to the laboratory and click the red disposal bucket to clear the lab.

8. If you want to repeat with a new practice unknown, return to the stockroom and retrieve it from the blue rack.

9. Continue until you obtain only green buttons when submitted.
