1. First, stand at least 3 m from a wall with a picture or sign on it. Hold the tip of a pen (or other object) up at arm's length with your arm pointed toward the picture.

2. Close one eye, and focus on the pen. While keeping your focus fixed on the pen, think about your perception of the picture on the wall behind the pen. Record your observations of the clarity of the picture or sign.

3. Now slowly approach the wall, keeping your focus on the pen, until you perceive both the tip of the pen and the picture to be in focus. You will find you can have both in focus before the pen touches the wall. Record the distance from the pen to the wall in cm.

4. Now hold the pen at arm's length and focus on the pen. Slowly move the pen closer until you can no longer see it focused. Record this distance from pen to eye in cm as your "near point."
