Assessment Task - Nutrition Blog
Students are to write a blog post targeted at a lay audience / members of the public, who don't necessarily have a background in science or nutrition.
Use the following features to guide you when writing your blog post.
Content: You should focus on the information that you think would be most useful to a person who is searching this topic on the internet. You can select from one of the following nutrition topics:
- Saturated fatty acids in the diet and their effect on cholesterol metabolism
- Omega-3 fats in the diet (food sources, types and health)
- The glycaemic index of carbohydrate containing foods (types, effect on blood glucose and health implications)
- The Mediterranean Diet and health
Please include information from at least five evidence-based sources. It is expected that you have an evidence-based reference for all claims made (aka, statements that are not personal opinions).
Empirical evidence: All the claims and suggestions you make need to be directly related to scientific evidence, which should be properly cited (see information on referencing below).
Voice: You are targeting a lay audience / members of the public, who don't necessarily have a background in science or nutrition. Keep this in mind when choosing the language you use to communicate your message - would your parents / siblings / friends / partner understand your message? What is the voice of the blog post? Try reading it aloud. Is it engaging? Are there complicated terms that you could simplify? Could you use a creative analogy to explain a particular concept? Would others find it interesting to read to the end, or would they lose focus?
Images: The blog post should be readable and visually appealing. You must include at least one picture in your blog post: either a photo you have taken or a hand-drawing. It is preferable that this is an original image (it belongs to you) and that you cite this as "Original image by [your name]" next to the image.
Any images taken from the internet, that are not your own, MUST be accurately sourced and you MUST have permission to reuse the image - this is basic copyright requirements! If you use an image from Pixabay or Unsplash this must be indicated.
Title: Please think of an engaging title to attract readers!
Format: Type your blog post in a Word document. Copy and paste the image into the appropriate location in the text.
Length: Your blog post should be 900-1100 words long (not including the reference list). Have you ever tried reading a blog post that is much longer than this? People lose interest! So this exercise tests your ability to turn a mass of complex information into a compelling, concise and informative written piece.
Think through the following questions before you proceed to actually drafting your own blog post:
Q1. What do you think might be the strengths and weaknesses of their blog?
Q2. Which blog titles or topics are the most appealing to you, and why?
Q3. Please find and read at least two blog posts. Which blog posts did you read, and what did you think about them?
Q4. What features stand out? Is it easier to read and why? Look at how they've used paragraphs (small sections vs. big sections - what is easier on the eye?), subheadings (do these help you find the information you're looking for at a glance?) and font (normal vs. bold vs. italics).
Q5. If you were invited to write a blog post for this website, what would you write about and why?
