Question

Summarize Altruism, Not Independence. For many, however, as nursing historian Dorothy Sheahan has noted, the training school, "was a place where . . . women learned to be girls." 27 The range of permissible behaviors for respectable women was often narrowed further through training. Independence was to be sacri?ced on the altar of altruism. Thus, despite hopes of aspiring students and promises of training school superintendents, nursing rarely united altruism and autonomy. Duty remained the basis for caring. Some nurses were able to create what they called "a little world of our own." But nursing had neither the ?nancial nor the cultural power to create the separate women's institutions that provided so much of the basis for women's reform and rights efforts. 28 Under these conditions, nurses found it dif?cult to make the collective transition out of a woman's culture of obligation into an activist assault on the structure and beliefs that oppressed them. Nursing remained bounded by its ideology and its material circumstances.
