Question

You are a nursing assistant working in a long-term care facility and are assigned to care for Addie this evening. She is a 93-year-old woman who is wheelchair bound and dependent on you for all her transfers. Every 20 minutes, she puts on her call light and asks you to take her to the toilet. It is very difficult for you to not be frustrated with Addie. She doesn't understand that you have other residents whom you must also care for, and she takes time away from them with her frequent bathroom requests.

a) Why do you think Addie wants to be on the toilet every 20 minutes?

b) Is this a physical or mental matter, or both? How would you communicate with Addie in a therapeutic manner?

c) How could you explain to Addie that she is taking time away from the other residents you must also care for?
