Question

Until the 1960's, most nurse were trained in diploma programs associated with hospitals. Diploma programs provided an immersive, clinically focused, and protocol-driven curriculum. During their training, student nurses lived on the hospital grounds, helped staff the hospital, and worked alongside of experienced nurses (Moss, et al., 2018). My aunt was in a diploma program at San Francisco General Hospital. I remember stories she told me about finishing her class and clinical, going to the cafeteria for dinner and then back to her dorm room (a room connected to an adjacent building of the hospital). Many nights she would just get to sleep when the resident mother would come around and wake the students up to help in surgery or the emergency department or other units were help was needed. Sometimes she would work all night and still have school and clinicals the next morning. What can we learn from the diploma model of nursing? What would make this model challenging to implement today?
