Assignment 1: Definition of Family
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to demonstrate your understanding of the meaning of family from your own personal experience, from experiences of others, and from current theoretical and statistical perspectives on family, as discussed in the literature.
Assignment Guidelines
Select 3 photos from a photo gallery or go to Google Images and enter "family" or another search term to find images that best depict your sense of family at this point in time (You can include pictures of your own family). Attach the pictures as appendices.
Explain how the photos selected represent the definition of family in general and based on your own experience of family in comparison to the statistical representations of family forms in Canada.
Discuss the major sociocultural changes that have contributed to the changing demographics of Canadian families and how this relates to your images, and experience of family.
Include the theoretical foundation(s) you find most helpful to explain your definition and your experience of family and why.
Use APA (6th ed.) format in your assignment.
Demonstrate critical analysis and synthesis of content and ensure writing is succinct and clear in your assignment. Reference sources should always include peer reviewed journal articles. Refer to the Scholarly Evidence Guide for more information on how to access peer reviewed sources.
Your reflection should be a maximum of 8 pages (excluding the title page, abstract, references, and appendices)
Your paper may be written in the first person, as it is based upon your personal perspective of family and how this compares to what has been said and written about it by others.
Assignment 2: Genogram and Ecomap
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to demonstrate your ability to construct a genogram and an ecomap accurately and to showcase your understanding of the value and the importance of using such tools in family nursing practice.
Assignment Guidelines and Marking Criteria
Draw or construct a genogram of your family. Then, draw or construct an ecomap for your family. Refer to the textbook for how to accurately delineate these diagrams. You may choose to peruse the sites listed below for help in constructing these diagrams:
You can either draw these diagrams on a piece of paper and scan it or construct them using computer software. Attach the completed diagrams as appendices.
A description of the various components of the genogram and ecomap and the relevance to family nursing assessment should be a maximum of 3 pages (excluding the title page, references, and appendices).

Assignment 3
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to explore your values and beliefs related to family nursing and family health promotion and to consider how they impact decision-making processes and professional judgment in nursing practice. By examining one's values and beliefs through critical reflection, assumptions in practice can be challenged to facilitate a preliminary shift in attitude, which is part of transformational learning (Melrose, Park & Perry, 2013).
Content
As a nurse, if you had the ability to select your patient assignments from the list of bios below, which 3 patients would you choose? What guided you in this decision-making process? What are some assumptions you had about the patients and families based on the descriptions alone? How would you proceed with the family nursing assessment and family health promotion with your selected patients?
From the same list of bios below, which 3 patients would you not choose if choice was an option? What influenced you in this decision-making process? What are some assumptions you had about these patients and families based only on the descriptions? How would you proceed with the family nursing assessment and family health promotion for this group of patients?
What family nursing theory/theories guided you in your family nursing assessment and family health promotion for both groups of patients?
Use APA (6th ed.) to format citations and references used in this assignment. Note: You have the flexibility to creatively present your work, outside of APA (6th ed.) criteria in either presentation format chosen, as indicated below.
Demonstrate critical analysis and synthesis of content and ensure writing is succinct and clear in your assignment. Reference sources should always include peer reviewed journal articles. Refer to the Scholarly Evidence Guide for more information on how to access peer reviewed sources.
Presentation
1) Present your reflections using ONE of the following ways
a) Use a journal format to share your reflections. You can find a journal template online at sites
Choose any journal format you like for your written submission. Your reflection should be a maximum of 6 pages in length and use APA 6th edition.
OR
b) Use a powerpoint (ppt) format with voice over narration to share your reflections. Use a maximum of 8 slides excluding the title slide and reference slide. Include elaboration of your slide content in the written speaker notes.
Outline only key points on the slides. All additional details should be added to the speaker notes. Ensure adequate white space on the slides.
Then, imagine that you are presenting this information to your classmates or colleagues in-person. Add voice over narration to your ppt slides. To enable voice over narration select "media" (sometimes is a drop-down menu) and "select record audio".
c) Spend some time reflecting on your choice of format for this assignment and include your reflection in the assignment. You may want to comment on the audio, visual, or narrative components of the chosen format that have helped you share your reflections in this assignment.
2) Creativity of expression is an important component in this assignment. Consider the use of photos, graphics, or other elements that would help illustrate your values and beliefs of family nursing and family health promotion as they relate to the patient bios in this assignment. Note: Ensure that the photos, graphics, or other elements chosen are cited and referenced in accordance to APA (6th ed.). (3 marks)
3) Transformational learning that is genuine occurs when students can converse with peers and instructors about thoughts and feelings that relate to specific decisions in their critical thinking process (Melrose et al., 2013). As well, new insights can be gained in a supportive, engaging, and transformative learning environment through critical self-reflection (Melrose et al., 2013). In this assignment, explore and share your deeply rooted values and beliefs of family nursing and family health promotion, as they relate to your decision-making process in selecting patients.
Assignment 4: Conference Participation
The following are general guidelines for your participation in the course forums:
- Select the appropriate conference in which to post your comments (see below).
- Contribute original thoughts or ideas to the conferences.
- Bring up new and related perceptions regarding issues discussed.
- Cite relevant sources to validate points made.
- Be open to divergent points of view
- Be respectful of the perceptions of others.
- Integrate material from previous units to formulate ideas and generate dialogue.
- Present responses that follow the rules of grammar and spelling.
Conference Participation Criteria
Conference participation is evaluated on the basis of the quality, quantity and timeliness of the comments that you post into the forums. Quality, quantity and timeliness must contribute to the substantive discussion of the unit content. Class participation is an essential component of this course. To score full marks on class participation, you are asked to post meaningful comments related to each unit and to participate in the participation element of assignment 3 as described above. Comments most highly evaluated are those relevant to the topic and presented in a way that expands our understanding. You may accomplish this by challenging a statement (in a humanizing way!); by posing thought-evoking questions; providing examples of a concept being discussed; or by providing additional references or resources that will assist classmates in deepening their understanding of a concept under discussion. Participation that has a positive tone and is shared in a supportive and respectful way is most desired. Refer to the Participation Marking Guide for additional direction information.
Conference Structure
Several different conferences have been created in the course for different purposes:
- Introduction conference is intended as a welcome to the course. It is a forum in which class members can introduce themselves to one another.
- Unit conferences are intended for discussion of unit content.
- Coffee House conference is a place where students can chat with one another about common interests, in an asynchronous format, that is open to all members of the class.
- Other conferences may be created by the instructor for specific purposes, for example the Assignment 3 Gallery.
It is most effective to write and save your comments in a word processing program and then copy and paste them into the conferences, rather than writing them directly into the conference forums.
