A researcher set up an experiment to study the effect of a new drug on smoking cessation. For this experiment he recruited sixty individuals who smoked at least 40 cigarettes a day. He placed the individuals into three groups. Each subject in the first group was asked to take one pill a day over a 30-day period; the pill was a placebo. The second group of individuals was asked to take one mild form of the pill a day for 30 days, whereas the last group of 20 subjects each took a strong form of the pill once a day for 30 days. At the end of the experiment the researcher obtained data on the number of cigarettes smoked by participants.
