You are going to enact the nonverbal expectancy violation theory. During this activity you will purposely enact a nonverbal behavior that is not expected. This could be anything from standing too close to someone to not making eye contact with a person. Think about what nonverbal behaviors we would expect in our culture to occur. You will then report what you did to enact the violation of expected behavior, you will report how the person reacted when you violated them, after you violate them you need to ask them how they actually felt and then report that as well, lastly you will report how you felt enacting the violation of expectations. Make sure that whatever you do does not get you in trouble. Be aware of boundaries that you should not cross, do not do anything illegal or unethical. Also remember that you need to talk to the person after you have done the violation so pick something that will not make them to angry or upset at you. Examples of this project that students have done in the past are: standing too close to someone in the elevator, denying eye contact to a close friend, hugging someone you would not usually hug as a greeting.

1. What did you do to violate someone's expectations/why was this a violation?

2. How did they react, nonverbally/verbally?

3. How did you feel while doing this violation?

4. Ask them how they felt after the violation and report what they felt,

5. Lastly how does this link to intercultural communication?
