Nonverbal cues are essential when included in communication. They add richness to a message providing those involved with more sensory information to decode messages being received. Facial expressions, body language and even physical appearance such as clothing choices affect the way messages are sent and perceived. Sometimes, verbal messages are not able to be properly decoded without nonverbal cues.
Perhaps during a social, networking function for a company, there is an individual that stands in the corner of the room away from the majority of people. They could be standing with their back to the center of the room with arms folded in front of them and their head down avoiding eye contact with people. This could indicate a few different things. Some people may display these forms of body language because they are shy and uncomfortable in social situations. Others may be doing it because they are having a bad day or prefer to avoid crowds and want to ensure they are not approached for discussions and meetings.
On the other hand, there could be someone that is dressed with some color and has a large smile and making eye contact with whomever they can. This may make them appear to be more approachable. If they also place themselves in the center of the room with an open frame and upright posture, they make themselves more available to meeting new people and networking.
Even subtle nonverbal cues are capable of putting of very strong messages. Being able to recognize and understand them will help an individual to become a more effective communicator.
