Nonverbal communication refers to communication produced by some means other than words. It could be eye contact, body language, or handshake. “The forms of nonverbal communications include kinesic cues, appearance and dress, artifacts, touch, space and paralanguage” (Back, 2017). Nonverbal communication can take place between two or more people, or between coworkers. Nonverbal communication plays important roles in face-to-face interactions such meetings, interviews, and presentations. Nonverbal communication is very important in the workplaces and conveys powerful messages in an organization. Maintaining good eye contact when speaking to others communicates how attentive you are in the discussion or interaction you are having. Handshake is another form of nonverbal communication cue used quite often. A firm handshake conveys confidence and positive attributes.

Last year, I assisted my manager in interviewing a potential employee, for an opening position in my unit. Only the two of us were in the room to interview the potential new employee and my manager advised me on what to look for and observe in the interviewee. When the interviewee entered the room, I welcomed her with a handshake. She gave me a good and firm handshake with a smile and eye contact. With those nonverbal cues, she already gave me a good first impression even before opening her mouth to answer the first question. She looked professional in her dress and maintained good eye contact throughout the interview. She looked directly into our eyes, conveying her interest, attention, and honesty. Her facial expression conveyed to us that she was happy to be interviewed, and she initiated interactions by asking questions with appropriate tone of voice. Our interviewee also excelled in the verbal questions she was asked, showing that she had full knowledge of the responsibilities required by the position she was being interviewed for.

At the end of the interview, we shook hands and our interviewee left. After she left the room, I discussed my observations with my manager. She agreed with my observations and decided to hire her and have her under my supervision.
