Non-verbal and Intercultural negotiation

You are a new appointed manager in a company. Imagine that you are selected to become one of the team members to represent your country in a negotiation event organised and funded by the Bureau of Trade and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. At the beginning of the program, you encountered difficulties in adjusting to the environment due to the cultural differences. People hardly understand your conversations and often misinterpreted your gestures as well as your intentions/thoughts. Since you are from Asia and English is not your native language, you realized that there is a need to change the way you communicate in a foreign, English-speaking country. You learned to master their accent and observed their body language when they speak. After a while you began to feel more comfortable and confidence as you managed to develop an excellent intercultural communication competence. You were able to mingle well with other representative from other countries, especially the western.  When the program ended, you are required to share and reflect your experience in overcoming the challenges that you faced throughout the program and how you found the effect of culture to the negotiation outcome. You decided to focus on the non-verbal communication aspect of it.

Referring to the above scenario:

1. Discuss FOUR (4) things that you are expected to do when you are appointed as a negotiation team members to represent Malaysia.

2. Elaborate TWO (2) communication strategies that should be employed during the first phase to reduce cultural differences.
