A researcher is examining the effects of non-medication treatments on lowering blood pressure for individuals with pre-hypertension (systolic blood pressure 120-139 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure between 80-89 mmHg). Fifty participants are solicited from hospital family waiting rooms (they are not hospital patients, but individuals waiting to visit or bringing a family member or friend to the hospital). Individuals who agree to take part in the study can choose to participate in either a progressive muscle relaxation group for twice a week for 8 weeks or a mindfulness meditation group for twice a week for 8 weeks.
