Question

Explain why a study in which pre-existing groups are assigned to conditions is called a "non-equivalent groups design." Also, explain why the groups are less likely to be highly similar in a non-equivalent groups design (compared to in a true experiment). Also, explain why this is a weakness of the non-equivalent groups design. Also, describe something that a researcher could do to improve the internal validity of a non-equivalent groups design (other than random assignment). Finally, describe a situation in which a non-equivalent groups design would need to be used instead of a true experiment and explain why a true experiment couldn't be done in that situation.

Hint: Some situations can't be set up in an experiment because of practical or ethical reasons.
