"The problems with the proposed No-Accommodations Anti-Bias Policy are obvious, especially when you examine other cases where we accommodate patient preferences. Consider, for instance, the fact that some patients have religious preferences for the gender of their provider. Many Muslim women, for instance, have a religiously-based preference not to have male doctors. Clearly, hospitals should accommodate these preferences in order to support patient comfort and facilitate trust and adequate care. Hospitals should do this regardless of whether they agree with the patient's perspective and values and regardless of whether it is frustrating to male doctors. This is no less true of Calamity Valley Hospital, which prides itself on providing culturally-sensitive care. Given the way Calamity Valley already does -- and should -- accommodate Muslim women's gender preferences, Calamity Valley Hospital should also accommodate patients' preferences about the race of their provider. There is, after all, no morally important difference between the two types of accommodations."
