Beethoven was one of the most influential and definitive composers in Western Music. He was the foremost sought-after pianist in Vienna in the early 1800's. He began to go deaf over the course of his life. This was one of the major hurdles he needed to overcome and be content with during this life. After his death, Romantic Composers such as Brahms, Schuman, and Liszt were highly influenced by his music. Composers found it challenging to compose symphonies after hearing Beethoven's ninth symphony. Many romantic composers felt they needed to write music in a new direction. Hence, composers started to explore programmatic music.
