Nightingale's poem to my understanding is conveying that nursing itself is a form of practice, something to be honed, trained, to be turned into an "art". I think it is absolutely relevant in today's nursing world. Personally, I felt this connected very well with my own interpersonal thoughts when it comes to nursing. Nursing is a form of art, and is something not quite appreciated, nor understood. We hear it casually in everyday lives when people not in the healthcare say things such as 'oh, I could never do nursing.' Or, 'that's so gross, I could could never change a person.' In a sense, you are saying you can't practice care, empathy, and time given to those in need. In oncology, we are the ones who prepare the body after someone has passed. I used to have those same thoughts until I became a CNA, and then I was taught how to properly clean others, skills honed to precision to care of another person, or make handle code's with clear critical thinking. When you start in healthcare, a lot of commodities lose meaning. For example, dealing with others genital areas, and nakedness does not affect me, and giving the respect.
