Did you know there are about 100,000 hairs in the average person's scalp? The density of hair is around the same for everyone but the differences in obvious hairiness are mainly due to differences in texture and color. (Saladin, 2020, p. 184). Hair is also known as pilus, it's a slender strand of keratinized cells that grow from an oblique tube in the skin called a hair follicle. There is hair everywhere on the body except for palms and soles and not all hair on the body is the same. There is downy hair which is on the fetus in the last 3 months of development. Then there is vellus hair, which is fine, pale hair sometimes referred to as 'peach fuzz'. The hair that covers the scalp and forms eyebrows and eyelashes is called terminal hair. (Saladin, 2020, p. 184). Hair's structure can be divided into 3 distinct parts- the medulla, which is the innermost layer of the hair shaft, the cuticle, which is the thin protective outer layer that contain the essentials for hair growth and then the cortex, which is the main component of the hair, containing long keratin chains that add elasticity, agility, and resistance to the hair. The part of the hair that is located within the follicle is called the hair root. The root is the only living part of the hair. The part of the hair that can be seen above the surface of the skin is the hair shaft. The shaft of the hair has no living activity and is considered dead. There are multiple functions of hair, but some functions of head hair are providing insulation to help the head retain heat, also to help protect the skin on the head from damage by UV light. (Wakim, 2021).

Like hair structure, the nail also has 3 main parts- the root, plate, and free margin. However, there are other structures surrounding the nail such as the nail bed which is the area of skin under the nail plate, the cuticle which is a layer of dead cells that overlap the nail plate that helps to prevent infection, and the nail fold which is a groove in the skin where the side edges of the nail plate are implanted. (Wakim, 2021). Nails tend to serve many purposes but protecting the fingertips and toes, enhancing sensations, and acting as tools are some examples of the functions of nails.

Critical thinking:

I find it interesting that sometimes when someone starts needing a haircut, they refer to their hair as having 'dead ends' but technically the whole strand of hair coming from the surface of the scalp is dead, not just the ends. It's also interesting to learn that the layers that make up hairs and nails are very similar to each other and are also made up of the same protein!
