Neuroscience Lecture
Today, I went to a neuroscience lecture on campus. I went this lecture today, because was curious about the topic, and I wanted to know more about it. . I’ve always have had an interest in the medical for as long as I can remember. I really want to go to this lecture, because I want to become a biomedical engineer. Basically, biomedical engineering is field of medicine and engineering combined. When I was in the military as a dental assistant, I start to have stronger bond for the medical field and its practice. When I got out of the military, I went back to school, because I was jobless for a while, and I felt I lost my dental assistant skills. Returning to school after taking the basic class, and dabbling around, I found myself leaning toward engineering. After taking an introduction to engineering class, I found out that there is field of engineering that combines both of my passions. So, when the neuroscience lecture came on campus, I jumped at the opportunity to see how the lecture would spark my curiosity. The first 45 minutes of the lecture was very boring, and I hate to admit it, but I dosed off several times. The last 45 minutes of the lecture, was wonderful. The lecture discussed how being a distinguished professor of neuroscience at () university, he had the opportunity to help developing countries, create there neuroscience medical program, and update updated hospitals in those countries. He begins his lecture by showing us PowerPoint slides of a Uganda hospital, and their equipment. The hospital, and the equipment he showed on his PowerPoint slide showed a hospital wasn’t up to modern standards, and had 1920’s medical equipment , which looked medieval. Being a professor of neuroscience at () university, he used his high status to create a neuroscience program, were trained people from Uganda to do neuroscience. Also, since he is the professor of neuroscience, he made it were residence of his medical programs from his university would do residence at this country, to provide medical help to its people, until the local residence doctor that were training to become neuroscience doctor graduated, and could provide medical assistance to their people. He also used his status to get surpluses medical equipment to update their medical equipment, and have a working, running medical hospital. Over the past years he has visited Uganda, and has supplied them with over 4 million dollar worth equipment, and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund, and maintain the hospital. Because of his selfless actions he has provided millions of people with health care and new medical doctor. It is now estimated that by the year 2020, there will be thousands of doctors practicing neuroscience, in Uganda, were there was only 20 in the whole country. To keep up the medical program, and continue to help Uganda provide medical help to its people Dr. (), goes to Uganda three times a year for 3-4 weeks every visit to provide medical assistance and up keep the medical practice, and hospital. Know that he did all of these things for this country, and continues to do so, I think he is remarkable human being, and I am glad I went to his lecture, because it taught me that once you achieve your goal in life, that you could share it with other to help them better themselves, as well as better yourself. Say this, I do feel a stronger pull towards biomedical engineering, because I could provide new technologies in medical equipment, and in medical body replacement break through to the needy, and countries that don’t have.
