Local Area Network Design
Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate the ability to select appropriate hardware and media types for a given specification.
2. Apply basic principles of network design for small campus networks for a given specification.
Assignment 1: Local Area Network Design
Submit one electronic copy of your report in PDF format onto MC Class Submission Point by the above deadline. Your submission title should be in the following format:
surname - initial letter of first name - Net Funds CW.
In case of more than one file, please submit a compressed winrar / winzip file that includes them.
Requirements of Assignment 1:
You will need to write a report that introduces the solution of designing a local area network for the given scenario (please find more details in the case study section).
Formatting:
Please use the template provided on MC-Class in the "Assignment" folder called Assignment: Network Design (Template).
You should use Harvard referencing in the body of your report and a list of references at the end of it.
Case study of Local Area Network Design:
1. Introduction to Requirements for LAN design
This Document has been prepared by the Head of the School of Computing of Derwent College. This is a new Building without a previous network installed. An internal consultation took place over three months in order to establish requirements. Those requirements are contained within this document.
2. Requirements of the Report
You are required to submit a professional report which should fulfil the following requirements.
Identification and Satisfaction of Requirements
Your report should clearly identify the requirements planned out in this document.
You should then proceed to explain how you meet the requirements. i.e. what you have proposed.
Discussion of Network Topology
The report should include physical and logical topology diagrams of the network. The following should be clearly labelled in this diagram:
- Servers
- Workstations and printers
- Switches/patch panels/routers/firewalls/racking/cooling etc.
- Cabling and connectivity (Wired and wireless)
- The diagrams should show how all of these connect together, it should be easy to follow and understand, and you may wish to use labels or icons to represent certain devices. Discussion of your proposed network topology should make reference to the network topology diagrams.
- Your discussion of cabling and connectivity should consider all possible options and you should provide justification for your choices.
- You should discuss suitable devices for connectivity on the LAN. Justify your choice of device by citing the key features and functionality which would meet the requirements of the organisation. You should consider devices for connecting workstations, providing Internet connectivity and security.
- You will need to decide on appropriate placement for the cabling and network infrastructure equipment. Remember to consider factors such as physical security and environmental control in your justification.
IP Addressing
The site will require IP addresses allocated to each device on the network. You have been given a private network address range of 172.16.0.0/20 which must be subnetted according to the department size. Each subnet size has already been allocated a surplus number of hosts. This will provide plenty of room for future growth.
For each of the subnets record the:
• First usable address of the subnet
• Last usable address of the subnet
• Subnet Mask used
• Broadcast address of the subnet
• Network address of the subnet
The table below must be completed with the subnetted addressing scheme. This can be found in the assignment template document on MC Class and you should add the calculated values to that document.

• You should briefly explain the motivation for subnetting a network in terms of security, isolation and scalability. You should research methods to logically separate networks on the LAN and the devices that could be used to achieve this.
• Each department will have a dedicated server to provide key services as well as a laser printer. Briefly discuss the allocation of IP addresses for these devices and the most appropriate method to allocate IP addresses to host machines and how this could be achieved.
