The goal of a case analysis it to systematically review information regarding a company's status at the time the case was written, evaluate key problems the company is experiencing at the time of the case, use analytical tools to outline the antecedents to and consequences of the problems identified, and develop some recommended solutions. The case should take the following format:

  1. Summary: You should open the analysis with a brief summary of the case. Assume the reader has not read the case and provide sufficient information to allow the reader to understand the context of the analysis. Make sure not to re-state with was written in the case, but to give one-two paragraphs explaining the purpose of the case.
  2. Identify central issues outlined in the case: Most cases are written in great detail, so it can be confusing to identify what are some of the key issues brought up in the case. It is similar to diagnosing an illness. A person can have many symptoms, but the doctor's role is to examine whether these symptoms are actually indicators of a key issue. The same is true in a case analysis. There are always problems in an organization, but your goal is to see if the problems outlined are actually indicators of a key issue. Make sure to carefully articulate the key issue(s) you aim to address in the case.
  3. Analyze the problem: Here is where your reading comes into play. Once you have identified the key issues you intend to address in the case, use the analytical tools to help organize the information from the case. For example, if you are completing a PESTLE analysis, you should re-read the case and pull out the information from the case that can be categorized in that analysis. Are there laws that in effect that can impact what that company does, negatively or positively? That would be listed under the PESTLE analysis.
  4. Select Alternatives: Once you have completed the analysis, including the use of all the analytical tools relevant to your analysis, start listing possible solutions to address the key issues. How do you think these problems should be addressed? No answer is too outlandish, because that is often where the best solutions lie.
  5. Recommendation. Imagine that this analysis if for a client. Once you have provided your client with a list of alternatives, they usually want your professional opinion as to what should be done. Here is where you give your professional opinion. After all of the information you have reviewed, and the alternatives you have provided, list your recommendation here.

Once you have completed each step, make sure to review your writing and assure that your solutions and recommendations are aligned with your analysis. There should be an obvious link between the analysis and the solution.
