Nervous System Disorders

The nervous system is a fascinating and complicated system. Please spend some time researching a disease or a trauma of the nervous system and present it to your classmates. Remember that a trauma is different than a disease as it can be caused by injury or accident.

Note: please do not discuss any neuromuscular conditions as many of them were touched upon in the unit 8 Discussion.

This week you will have a choice of two different topics to discuss as your main post. Please choose either Option 1 or Option 2 only.

Option 1: Discuss a nervous system disease or disorder.

• What disorder or disease did you choose?
• What part of the nervous system is affected?
• What are the symptoms?
• Is there a genetic link to or any predisposing factors associated with this disease or disorder?
• How is the quality of life affected for those that have this disease or disorder?
• What are the current standard treatments? Are there any new treatments on the horizon? If so, explain.
• Would you seek an alternative treatment for this disease? (e.g. Chiropractic or Acupuncture)? Why or why not? Explain.

Option 2: Discuss a nervous system trauma.

• What trauma did you choose?
• How does this trauma occur? Is there any way to avoid this trauma?
• What part of the nervous system is affected?
• What are the outcomes from the trauma?
• How is the quality of life affected for those that experience this trauma?
• What are the current standard treatment options for this trauma? Are there any new treatments on the horizon? If so, explain.
• Would you seek an alternative treatment for this trauma (e.g. Chiropractic or Acupuncture)? Why or why not? Explain.
