Question

A field sobreity test that invloves walking in a straight line, touching your ?nger to your nose with your eyes closed and reciting the alphabet backwards are used to determine the functioning of the nervous system and muscular systems. The part of the nervous system mostly affected is the voluntary or somatic nervous system. The neurons that function in these areas will begin to slow down. This is mostly because alcohol is a depressant to the human body. The more alcohol that is consumed the slower the central and peripheral nervous systems responds. The tests are checking to see how well the subject is following directions, making any statements and depth perception. The cerebellum is a part of the brain that mostly controls balance and coordination. Alcohol will cause the signals being sent through the nervous system to the neurons controlling motor function to slow down. This will affect the person's ability to walk in a straight line as well as maintain balance and coordination. The touching of the nose test with the head slightly titled backwards looks for balance, coordination and ataxia. The of?ce is noting if the person can stand steady or do they sway. The reciting the alphabet backwards test, the officer looks for slurring of words or letters and memory.
