This issue of divorce and its impact on children is a particularly challenging one to discuss. Both sides of this debate agree that there is data that points to the negative consequences of divorce on a child. Perhaps the key word to consider is “potential”—that there is no direct correlation between the two, and that the data does not control for other factors in a child’s life. Another important discussion around this issue is the alternatives to divorce. Do you think there are alternatives to divorce when a couple is unhappy? If one member of a relationship is suffering from addiction, or is abusive to the other, should the couple remain together in order to avoid the potentially negative consequences of divorce?
