Culture consists of many things including language, symbols, values and beliefs. since language is tied so closely to culture, it is a very important consideration for sociology. Various state governments, local governments and the federal government have all made proposals to make English the official language. Watch the following video which explores the issue:

Now, consider the proposed idea of making English the official language of the U.S. research the topic briefly on the internet, then write discussion response based on the video and what you found.

*Identify at least two positive or negative consequences of declaring English the "official language" of the United States based on what side of the debate in find yourself.

*Why do people strongly support or oppose this goal?

*How would making citizens learn a new language to adequately function in society affect their culture? Explain.
