Job Description: Senior Metallurgist

Department: Metallurgy and Customer Technical Support

Main Activities

• Ensure process and product conformance in the production environment, including furnace practices, casting practices, homogenising practices, inspection and product approval.
• Ensure that highly reproducible, accurate and reliable management information systems (MES, SCADA) are available to monitor recoveries at various stages of production.
• Ensure continuous development of information / data management to minimise human errors in reporting systems.
• Ensure that product development activities are undertaken and implemented, including developing and implementing new casting procedures, furnace practice, etc in a timely and professional manner.
• Ensure smooth functioning of quality system procedures along with updating Standard Metallurgical Procedures.
• Ensure that incoming raw material (from new suppliers) for production purposes are checked. (Evaluation of RAME).
• Ensure that quality and quality system related documents are updated. (SOP, SMP).
• Developing casting parameters for new products and re-engineering practices for established products.
• Troubleshooting casting related production problems.
• Submit monthly reports on: Production / Recoveries, Issues of concern, significant achievements, process changes and developments, cost saving initiatives and projects
• Carry out random checks on MES crystal reports and take corrective action incase of discrepancies.
• Training the supervisors, technicians, inspectors and operators regarding: Metallurgical procedures, Inspection and analytical procedures, Safety, Documentation, Metal sampling and testing requirements.
• Suggest and carry out corrective and preventive actions to improve/strengthen Quality System and finished product quality.
• Training CH operators on casting operations and trouble shooting for defects.
• Assist operations in conducting RAME trials and develop alternative vendors.
• Ensure Metallography activities and routine checks are carried out as per plan/requirement.
• Investigate customer complaints and internal process related problems using records, trends, technical papers, metallurgical test data and metallography results.
• Evaluate new product enquiries and recommend approval to Marketing. Modify process if necessary to meet new enquiries.
• Assist in control of non-conforming products and evaluation.
• Control of documents related to product specifications.
• Develop process parameters for furnace batching, casting and inspection.
• Develop process parameters for degassing, filtration and furnace treatments.
• Develop and document procedures for metallography and test equipments.
• Interacting with production department to identify and resolve process related problems.
• Contribute in preparation of documents for management review etc.
• Conduct SORs and participate in PJOs and Risk Assessments.
• Update inspection standards as per quality systems requirements.
• Conduct and provide metallurgical and quality system training to other departments, as required.
• Spearhead cost reduction programmes.
• Conduct data analysis from time to time for monitoring variation in key processes.
• Diagnose technical problems (product and process related) and causes, recommend and implement corrective actions.
