Senario:

A 72-year-old female resident (Chinese migrant) in your aged care facility expressed personality and mood changes, disinhibition and language difficulties. The resident is gradually losing her ability to understand or formulate words in a spoken sentence. She speaks in Mandarin (Chinese) very often these days and finds it difficult to communicate both in English and Mandarin. She started showing signs of distress and was observed to be withdrawn. You are asked to assist the resident with feeding.

You are required to perform the following activities as part of this task:

- Identify the nature of dementia and use appropriate nursing interventions when working with the resident. Verbalise response to the assessor

- Provide activities appropriate to the gender, culture and age of the resident considering their individual likes and dislikes.

- Use validation strategies, instructed activities and re-orientation therapy to relieve distress and agitation in the resident.

- Discuss with the RN the concept of disengagement theory in relation to an ageing population. Demonstrate how you could ensure companionship and social inclusion for this resident while demonstrating appropriate understanding of the disengagement theory.
