Take a moment to explore the major calamities that have affected individuals worldwide within the last 5 years (Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Irene, the Japan earthquake/tsunami, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico). Select two contemporary natural disasters that have occurred within the last 5 years, and analyze the two incidents based on the following points:

  • The nature and magnitude of the disasters.
  • The health status of individuals affected by the disasters (include information about victims' physical health, and social health statuses)
  • The type of relief efforts provided by governmental, non governmental, and private organizations in each disaster.
  • Inadequacies in relief efforts of the disasters
  • Review the CDC's Public Health Capabilities: National Standards for State and Local Planning report. After reviewing the document:
  • List three salient strategies that you might include to help prepare for future natural disasters.
  • Address how these strategies might have been beneficial with the past natural disasters.
