Registered nurses need to be competent in many areas in practice and in all settings. The competencies listed below are a few of the nationally recognized standards of practice for registered nurses outlined by the American Nurses Association. Registered nurses are expected to understand and demonstrate these competencies in practice and are often a part of their job descriptions. Registered nurses are expected to meet these competencies wherever they are providing care. This can be in a hospital, clinic, and community service area or as a volunteer. Purpose: To apply competencies for a registered nurse in an acute care and ambulatory care setting by describing ways a nurse will demonstrate fulfilling these competencies.
