Coming from a social worker background. We are held by National Association Social Workers Ethic Code of Conduct because of the diverse populations and sensitive issues that we address. The NASW Code of Ethics is a set of standards that guide the professional conduct of social workers (National Association of Social Workers, 2020). Organizations put ethic codes in place to created and influences positive behavior among their employees and customers they serve. Ethic codes are standards the employer maintains to give employees confidence to keep the moral of the company a pleasant place of employment. The ethic code should not be bias. It should respect and accommodate all mankind. This will allow diverse of employee to be productive.
I was a Case Worker for Child Protective Services for Baltimore City Human Services. My position required me to respond and serve the victim as well as the perpetrator in cases such as trauma, neglect, physical, sexual, and mental abuse. Most of these incidents were in communities with the highest crime rates and poverty. The moral of communities in poverty can be cold and cause a challenge to serve. People who live in these communities are dealing with all types of barriers such as substance abuse, unemployment, mental health, dysfunctional families, crime, gangs, human trafficking to just name a few. It takes courage to provide services under these circumstances. If not, careful it can cause more chaos than help. My objective is to ensure the victim is safe and receive care as needed and the perpetrator receive rehabilitation services. In most cases providing services to families were court order which made the respondent more difficult to serve. To accomplish these goals the ethic codes, served as a guideline on how to treat those we serve, regardless of their race, gender, religion, maltreatment, or crime they committed. Everyone is entitled to available resources. As a worker my emotions and opinions does not determine who I serve. My ability to comply with the ethic codes determine my behavior to uphold the moral of the agency. This contributed to my success in building trust and helping families reunite and prevent reoccurrences. Ethic codes also set boundaries to maintain client and worker professional relationship.
