Symbol Text and Meaning
Assignment: What Sign (Icon, Symbol, or Index) Best Represents Me?
Rationale: There are a myriad of ways that we interact with signs in our realities. These connections link us to society and culture, and they are more influential than you may realize. At this stage in your life, what sign do you think best represents you?
Directions:
NOTE: There are two (2) parts to this assignment:
Choose or create a sign and visually represent it
Describe your thinking in a short essay
Take a moment to reflect on where you are in your life right now.
Decide on one sign (it can be an icon, a symbol, or an index) that best characterizes and represents you.
Develop a plan for presenting this sign in a visually meaningful way.
Present it in a format of your choosing. To complete this required component, you may draw or sketch, create a collage, find something online and add to it (give credit where appropriate), use font and editing tools to uniquely portray your choice, make a video, create a slideshow, use a combination of techniques, etc. It does not have to be extravagant, but it must be thoughtfully chosen.
Write a description (300 words minimum/600 maximum) explaining your choices, plan, and thought processes. Discuss why you chose that particular sign. Explain the thinking behind your choices. Tell me what you were trying to achieve and whether or not you succeeded. What was the intended meaning behind your choice? How would you expect your peers to interpret this sign? Would their interpretation match your intent? What cultural and societal influences may have impacted the construction of and the interpretation of your creation?
Is your sign iconic, symbolic, or indexical? Why do you think that? Explain your thinking.
