How to respond to? From my short experience in the military, many of those that I work with are Theory Y employees. Many of those are motivated to serve from their own pride and passion. The military has many opportunities available at all levels, so the motivation typically comes from those opportunities. The junior officers and enlisted members are mostly Theory Y employees. I have experienced only the operations side of the military. Many of the more senior officers have explained that your role becomes more managerial over operational as you move up through the ranks. Many of the employees in staff roles and command and control units often have a shift in mentality. The mentality changes to a theory x motivation. This shift occurs mainly because of the structure that the units are under.
