Project: Exploring leadership and communication within diverse contexts.

Your group project asks you to investigate a "simple" problem and offer a solution(s). The case centers on an online discussion that occurred at Women's Day at the Birkenshire Corporation between the primarily female staff in the China office and senior management in the UK head office who are primarily male. You are to investigate (describe the issues and differences) and offer a solution to resolve the issue and a road forward to avoid this issue the following year.
You want to focus on the aspects of diversity (cross-culture - mainly Chinese vs UK) and communication.
NB: when considering the issues and offered solutions make sure you consider the lens you are interpreting the situation through. How does your Emirati/Arabic culture influence your interpretation of the situation and subsequent decisions offered? Does your gender influence your interpretations and solutions? (This case was developed with solutions at Ivey Business School in Canada but the author is Chinese.)
Upon successful completion of this short case, you should be able to
• assess various perspectives in a subtle and complicated scenario of cross-cultural communication;
• understand how staff members, coming from diverse cultural, gender, and professional backgrounds, interpret messages and gestures in completely different ways;
• understand how conflicts can easily occur as a result of misperceived hostility in heated discussions;
• evaluate options for dealing with cross-cultural conflict in the workplace; and
• develop a plan for management to deal with issues raised by multicultural staff and resolve future conflict.
You should include the following.
Part 1:
• Briefly describe and evaluate either Hofstede's Culture framework or CQ (culture intelligence: Earley and Mosakowski, 2004) to set the stage for part 2.
Part 2:
• In this part,draw on all the models used to date, research provided (I include some further information) and further research that you will have to do. Focus on the culture and perhaps gender dimensions and resolve the problem including a plan going forward so this negative situation is avoided in the future. (You will need to know about Hofstede and CQ - culture intelligence.)
E.g. does the colour - pink (red) have a particular meaning or connotation to different cultures? Do different cultural groups behave differently? Draw on the culture frameworks to underpin your evaluation. How will you lead successfully? Consider similarities and differences. (Go deep and focused rather than trying to cover all aspects.)
Make sure you provide evidence and examples.
• Make sure you include an evaluation through your Emerati/Arabic lens.
Part 3:
1. Develop a research poster (no PowerPoint!) and give a 20 minutepresentation.
