Part 1
A helicopter support company for an Army Battalion has a fleet of 8 helicopters that are used sixteen hours per day, 7 days a week. Minimum operational performance requires that the support company needs a minimum of 6 helicopters to be available. Company maintenance records show that the helicopters have had 7 breakdowns over a period of 1783 operational hours.
Q1 - What is the helicopter breakdown rate per 1000 hours?
Q2 - How many total maintenance events would we expect in a 2-week deployment?
The helicopters undergo maintenance at the end of each 16-hour period and we can assume that all failures that have occurred during that 16-hour period are fixed.
Q3 - What is the probability that ALL 8 helicopters will function without failure in a 16- hour period?
Q4 - What is the probability that EXACTLY 7 helicopters will function without failure in a 16-hour period?
Q5 - What is the probability that EXACTLY 6 helicopters will function without failure in a 16-hour period?
Q6 - Using the answers to Q3, Q4 and Q5, above what is the probability that the support company will achieve minimum operational performance as defined above over a 16-hour period?
Part 2
To prepare for this part of the assignment please first work through Activity 1.1 of Study Guide 1 on Moodle. This is essential.
Q7 - Re-calculate the probabilities calculated by you in the first Activity 1.1 of Study Guide 1 on Moodle on the assumption that there is NO TEST carried out at point A but the test at point B is still performed. During this test at point B 95% of missile functions that are mission critical are fully tested.
Both A and B are as shown in Figure 1.2 of the MREGC5103 Unit Book. Assume new failure rates per million hours, REPEAT assume new failure rates per million hours for various phases as below:
Magazine 9 (Non-Op), Launcher 22 (Non-Op), Boost Phase 5600 (Op) and Cruise Phase 1300 (Op). A blank copy of the table is given below for your convenience:

Q8 - What is now the overall probability that the target will be hit?
Q9 - Do you think that abolishing the test at point B would be a good trade-off against increasing the quality and reliability of the components in the missile system to improve the non-operating and operating failure rate figures? One paragraph answer required here.
Q10 - The coverage of the test carried out at point B is 95%. What type of components do you think might be difficult or impossible to test or verify under these circumstances?
