Question 1. Prepare a summary of your notes to demonstrate that you have understood, on the one hand, the distinctions between reliability, availability, maintainability, trade off analysis, and sensitivity analysis and, on the other hand, the relationships between them. There is often a wide variation in the understanding of these terms and you must be able to define and describe them. Pay particular attention to illustrating that you have understood the definitions as well as the derivations of the various related graphs presented in O'Connor, Patton and the other resources. Include relevant equations and discuss them. Your summary should comment on the extent to which these elements impact on life-cycle costs.

Hint: The best way of demonstrating understanding is for you to illustrate your work with examples from your own organisation, highlighting the assumptions you have had to make.

Question 2. The common definition for reliability is "The probability that an item will perform a required function without failure under stated conditions for a period of time". A farmer needs to pump water from an underground water source to water stock. He has a choice of a windmill, solar panels or diesel powered pump. He needs a reliable water supply. Using the common definition for reliability, compare the three options and which one would you consider to be the most reliable to perform the function. Identify any relevant conditions or constraints.

Question 3. A regional community hospital is considering a backup power supply in case of power failure. To help with the selection process a reliability prediction and forecasting study is required. Describe what you would want to include in a model so that the correct method could be chosen to model and predict the reliability of the power supply.
