Assignment 1 - Preventive Replacement

Question 1: Bearings

Heavy duty bearings in a steel forging plant have failed after the following numbers of weeks of operation:

Use OREST to estimate the following Weibull parameters:

BETA.

ETA.

Mean Life.

Compare the results to those obtained by hand in Question 3 of Assignment 1.

Question 2: Fanbelts

Records from two heavy duty dumper trucks show the fanbelt failures occurred at the following odometer readings (kilometres from new):

(a) Prepare reliability data in a form suitable for analysis by OREST.

(b) Use OREST to determine the following Weibull parameters:

Scale Parameter, ETA.

Mean Life.

(d) From the Weibull probability plot, do you observe any trends, besides those given by the parameters?

Question 3: Sugar centrifuge cloth

The cloth filter on a sugar centrifuge is currently replaced on a preventive basis if a suitable opportunity occurs and the cloth has been in use for at least 20 hours. The cloth is also replaced on failure. The following data are available:

Use OREST to analyse the failures and estimate the following parameters: BETA, ETA, Mean Life. What type of failure pattern is dominant? What type of root cause is indicated?

Assignment 2 - Financial analysis of capital equipment replacement

Canmade Limited wants to determine the capital replacement age for its turret sideloaders to minimise total discounted cost. Historical data analysis has produced the following information (all costs in present day dollars):

The cost of a new turret sideloader is $150 000, and the interest rate for discounting purposes is 12%.
