A motorcyclist is brought into the emergency department after a motorcyle accident. The patient reports that he swerved to avoid hitting a deer in the road and lost control of his motorcycle. The ED physician confirms an open left tibia (proximal) fracture. The orthopedic surgeon then takes the patient to surgery where he performs extensive debridement of gravel, glass, and other matter, down to and including part of the muscle, at the site of the fracture. He then performs a reduction of the Type II fracture, and the patient is subsequently admitted to the hospital. Code the injury, procedure and all necessary external cause codes.
