Question

Motor development is a major development stage in a child during the first year of life. It contributes to a child's ability to learn "balance and posture as well as whole-body movements such as crawling, and in fine motor development, which entails more finely tuned movements of the hands such as grasping and manipulating objects". Ones culture can have a major impact on how these development skills come about and to what extent they develop. Take for example the Ache people who are a South American Indian Culture. Ache mothers have extremely close contact with their children "strapping, carrying, or holding them 93% of the day and 100% throughout the night". Thus, resulting in the ache children's ability to walk not until they reach the age of 2 years old. Although some of these children may be able to walk, they choose not to because of how much they admire being carried. Now, compare this to the Kenyan culture where they promote motor skills as early as 2-3 months old. Placing their infants in shallow holes propped up by blankets months before they could sit up on their own. Two vastly different cultures but with prominent impacts on an infants.
