Motivating Employees through Compensation and Benefits
Human resource managers have the duty to engage employees through workshops, seminars and behavior analytics to gauge how to motivate them and improve overall productivity. Through such a collaborative approach, they can ask employees what motivates them and if they need the management to make any changes. It is imperative that the human resource department gets the feedback and tailor incentives in a way that reflect the wishes and needs of the workforce. The employees are an integral part in the corporate culture, mission, and vision of a company. Consequently, theyhave to be comprehensively and strategically incorporated in constructive discussions (Lazaroiu, 2015). Through analysis of employee behavior, discussions on social media, and body language, the managers can assess how best to incentivize their employees. However, the incentives chosen should be given on merit. For instance, long-serving employees should be considered first during promotions and retention while those who have excelled in assigned tasks could be given a salary raise and acknowledged through appropriate ways.
Some of the incentives that have worked for companies such as Coca-Cola and Wal-Mart are attractive remuneration, bonuses, work leave, health insurance, pension and retirement plans. Nevertheless, companies have different ways of doing business and what worked for one company may not necessarily work for another (Lazaroiu, 2015). Hence, the need to include employees in such discussions to know what will work for them. Raising a salary makes the employee to feel appreciated and even work harder to get recognized and exceed expectations. Bonuses are a way of saying, “thank you, you are part of the success (Yusof, Munap, Badrillah, Hamid & Khir, 2017). On the other hand, benefits such as leave allowance enable employees to reconnect with their families and loved ones. Moreover, pension and health covers mean the company is concerned about the health of employees and have a send-off package for them upon retirement (Yusof et al., 2017). Research demonstrates that the success of companies such as Coca-Cola is mainly because of employee motivation incentives such as attractive benefits, inclusion, timely communication, and appropriate rewards and praises for tasks completed in time or goals attained.
