Moore's table for Iron, the most stable element in the universe.

A) From its electron configuration and the ground state, how many singly occupied levels does it have in the ground state?

B) The spin-orbit coupling in Iron is much higher than in first and second row elements. Give some evidence for this based on the Moore's table.

C) We normally don't think of metals as being strongly absorbing or fluorescent. But in their atomic form, there are a lot of allowed optical transitions. The core of a star is quite hot (~5000 - 1000K). Consider population of iron atoms that is hot enough to have both of the following levels occupied:

3d6(5D)4s4p(3P°) ⁵D₄ 25,899 cm-1

3d7(2P)4s ³P₂ 24,335 cm-1

How many wavelengths can these irons atoms emit, and what are they? You will need to apply the atomic transition selection rules

D) Compare this to a single electron system, Hatom. If the H atom were in the 3p configuration and in one of the ²P_3/2 states, how many states can it emit to, and what are their wavelengths?
