After falling off a ladder 3 days ago, a 60 year old man comes into the hospital complaining of shoulder pain. The man is presented with localized swelling, weakness, a decrease in his range of motion, as well as pain on palpation of the right anterior shoulder. Shoulder abduction and external rotation increase his pain.
The man complains that he cannot comb his hair or brush his teeth because he cannot hold his arm up for an extended period of time (a few seconds) without pain occurring. An x-ray showed nothing of significance and the aesthetic he was provided helped with the pain but did not fix his range of motion or weakness.
